Read these three stories and look up the unknown words in a dictionary.

Text 1:

“Roots”

When he was a boy, Alex Haley's relatives told him about their family. They told him about his great-great-great-great grandfather, Kunta Kinte.

Kunta Kinte lived in a village in Africa. One day he left his village and he never saw his family again. Four men captured him. They took him to America in a ship with a lot of other men and women. The men sold Kunta Kinte in the slave market.

Kunta Kinte's master was very cruel and Kunta Kinte ran away. But his master caught him and cut off his foot. Doctor William Waller bought Kunta Kinte and he worked in the doctor's garden. Kunta Kinte married Bell, the doctor's cook. They had a daughter. Her name was Kizzy.

In 1967 Alex Haley found Kunta Kinte's village in Africa. He wrote a book about his family. The book was called 'Roots'.






Text 2:

Last Monday afternoon Jane was in the kitchen. She was cooking some chips. While she was heating some oil in a pan, the telephone rang. When she heard the telephone, she went to answer it, but she forgot about the oil. It was her friend, Kelly, on the phone. While she was talking to Kelly, the oil caught fire. When Jane saw the fire, she ran into the kitchen.

Then Jane did the wrong thing. She opened the back door and picked up the pan. But as she was taking the pan outside, she burnt her hand and she dropped the oil. Jane was very lucky, because the burning oil missed her. But remember: fire is dangerous. When oil catches fire, throw a damp towel over it. Don't pick up the pan.






Text 3:

One Sunday afternoon in July 1545 crowds of people were in Portsmouth. They were watching the English ships. King Henry VIII was in South sea Castle. He was watching the ships, too. It was a windy day, but the people were still happy. Their ships were going to fight the French. Men and women, boys and girls were singing and cheering and waving flags.

But as the ships were sailing past South sea castle a disaster happened. The wind blew very hard and the king’s favourite ship, the Mary Rose, turned over and sank.

The wreck stayed at the bottom of the sea for over four hundred years. Then in 1982, engineers made a special cradle for the ship and lifted it with a giant crane. While they were lifting it, part of the cradle broke.
But the engineers repaired it. Now you can see the Mary Rose in a special museum in Portsmouth.
